System: The Integumentary System

1. What is the major organ of the integumentary system? 

skin

2. Approximately how much surface area does this organ cover?

3. What are the 3 layers within this organ?

4. List 4 accessory structures found within this system.

- sebaceous glands

5. What are the main functions of this system?

6. What is the main function of both skeletal and muscular systems?  

to protect organs and support body weight

7. Approximately how many muscles are there in our bodies? 600 8. Bones? 650

9. What type of muscle makes up the heart and why do you think this is so? 

Cardiac tissue skeletal muscle tissue and smooth muscle tissue

10. What other body system plays a direct role in moving muscles?

11. Why is the nervous system like a “telegraph”?  

Because they act like wires carrying a message around the body and can give or receive information from other cells

12. What are the 2 parts of the Central Nervous System (CNS)? 

The central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system are the two parts of the nervous system

13. What is the peripheral nervous system?

The peripheral nervous system the spinal cord and the brain to send messages around the body


14. What functions are controlled by the autonomic nervous system? 


Blood pressure heart and breathing rates body temperature digestion metabolism

15. What are the main components of the cardiovascular system? The heart blood vessels and blood

16. How much blood does the average adult contain? 4.5 to 5.5 liters

17. What is the main function of blood?  To carry oxygen around the body

18. What are the different components of blood?  Plasma ,red blood cells, wite blood cells, plates and oxygen

Respiratory System

19. What is the main function of the respiratory system? 

The main function is to work and help you breathe and move fresh air into your lungs by pushing out all of the gas

20. What organs are involved in carrying out these functions? Lungs and heart tissue 

21. What are the differences between the systemic and pulmonary circuits? (click on these tabs in  the menu on the right) 

The pulmonary circuit moves blood between the heart and lungs then when its been oxygenated it goes to the stmatic cicit and is seent back to the heart

Digestive System

22. What is the purpose of the digestive system? It helps break down food that you have eaten and turn it into energy and nutrition so that you can get rid of all of the waste

23. What are the main organs of the alimentary canal? 

Liver, stomach , intestines, mouth and anus

24. List the accessory organs of the digestive system and explain why they are called 

“accessory”. 

Liver gallbladder and ingestion they are called accessory organs because you could do without them if need be

25. Define the term “peristalsis” and explain why it is important. 

It is a series of muscle contractions and is important because it helps food move through the digestive system

26. What is another name for the urinary system? The renal system

27. What is the purpose of the urinary system?

 It is to filter blood and create urine and take nutrition from the blood

28. Give some examples of factors that can affect the amount of urine excreted each day. 

The types of food you eat can produce different amounts of urine 

29. What are the main components of the urinary system?

The main component of the urinary system is the urethra 


this is an example of my learning and my next step in it is to go into more detail about certain things
